Background

Colors Rainbow  began as a specific Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) project of the NGO Equality Myanmar (EQMM) in 2007 known as Human Rights Education Institute of Burma (HREIB).

While locating in Thai-Burma border by running activities, over 400 participants from LGBT communities in Burma and Burmese border areas had attended Colors Rainbow’s LGBT trainings and follow-up discussions. Representatives from 20 Burmese LGBT CBOs had taken part in the networking conferences, ILGA-Asia to collaborate on activities and advocacy campaigns.

With the gradual opening of the civil society space in Burma and the strengthening of the LGBT network, Colors Rainbow transitioned inside Myanmar in 2013 and started enhancing a common understanding and acceptance of dignity and human rights in order to terminate discriminatory ideas against LGBT individuals.

Colors Rainbow addresses LGBT rights from a multifaceted program perspective which consists of trainings, discussions, networking meetings, community events, lobbying, advocacy and research projects, and the production of multimedia resources in Myanmar-language through website, and magazine covering LGBT rights issues in Myanmar.

Each year Colors Rainbow holds community events to commemorate international days of awareness such as the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHO), Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR) and World AIDS Day.

Colors Rainbow is an LGBT rights umbrella organization with offices in Yangon and Dawei and currently made up of sixteen full-time staff.
